Quick Answers

What does R-value mean?

R-value measures how well insulation resists heat flow. The higher the number, the better it insulates. EPS foam board gives roughly R-4 per inch. See the R-value and thickness guide.

What does psi mean on foam board?

Psi is compressive strength: how much pressure the foam can take before it compresses by 10%. It matters most under slabs and on roofs. See the density and compressive strength guide.

Is EPS, XPS or polyiso right for my job?

Each has strengths. EPS costs less for the same R-value and keeps its R-value over time. Polyiso gives more R-value per inch above the roof deck. XPS has the highest strengths. See the EPS vs. XPS vs. polyiso guide.
